چکیده

This paper presents the rheology of weakly wetted granular materials in the slow frictional regime, using Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations. In a split-bottom ring shear cell geometry a slow, quasi-static deformation leads to wide shear bands away from the walls. Dry non-cohesive and cohesive materials are compared in order to understand the effect of liquid bridge capillary forces on the macroscopic flow properties. Different liquid contents lead to different flow curves when measuring the shear stress-strain relations, helping to understand the effect of wetness on the flow of granular materials. © 2014 The Authors. A Modified Stokesian Dynamics Method for Mineral Suspensions

A 3-dimensional modified Stokesian dynamics-based technique for simulating mineral particle suspensions is presented. Stokesian dynamics is a mesh free particle approach, which resembles the discrete element method. It includes hydrodynamic interactions and other interparticle forces. Expressions for the hydrodynamic interactions were modified based on results from finite element (FE) calculati...

Finite element simulations of hydrodynamic trapping in microfluidic particle-trap array systems.

Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation is a powerful tool in the design and implementation of microfluidic systems, especially for systems that involve hydrodynamic behavior of objects such as functionalized microspheres, biological cells, or biopolymers in complex structures. In this work, we investigate hydrodynamic trapping of microspheres in a novel microfluidic particle-trap array de...

Numerical Simulation of Granular Column Collapses with Pressure-Dependent Viscoplastic Model using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic Method

This paper presents a numerical analysis of granular column collapse phenomenon using a two-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics model and a local constitutive law proposed by Jop et al. This constitutive law, which is based on the viscoplastic behaviour of dense granular material flows, is characterized by an apparent viscosity depending both on the local strain rate and the local press...

Hydrodynamic Behavior of Particles in a Jet Flow of a Gas Fluidized Bed

Numerous investigations have been devoted towards understanding the hydrodynamics of gas jets in fluidized beds. However, most of them address the problem from  macroscopic point of view, which does not reveal the true behavior in the jet region at the single particle level. The present work aims to understand the jet behavior from a more fundamental level, i.e. the individual particle leve...

Modeling the crystallization of spherical nucleic acid nanoparticle conjugates with molecular dynamics simulations.

We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the crystallization of spherical nucleic-acid (SNA) gold nanoparticle conjugates, guided by sequence-specific DNA hybridization events. Binary mixtures of SNA gold nanoparticle conjugates (inorganic core diameter in the 8-15 nm range) are shown to assemble into BCC, CsCl, AlB(2), and Cr(3)Si crystalline structures, depending upon particle stoichiom...
